Tips for Installation of Original Edged Weapon Replacement
Parts
For lots more information on subjects like this, click
here to see LTC (ret) Johnson's set of reference
books "Collecting the Edged Weapons of the Third
Reich"
1. When replacing scabbard screws, make sure to use the
proper size screwdriver. Otherwise, damage to the screw
head may result. Use an ice pick to align scabbard holes
with fitting holes.
2. Because of the many different parts manufacturers, it
may be necessary to shorten the threaded blade tang to allow
the pommel to tighten down correctly. After filing the tang
to proper length, slightly taper at top so the pommel will
screw on easily. Be careful not to damage the blade tang
threads.
3. When fitting Army or 2nd model Luftwaffe grips, use a
thin flat file. Try to keep the tang hole square as on originally
installed grips.
4. When fitting grip bands (ferrules) on Army and Luftwaffe
daggers, use sandpaper to reduce the size of the grip in
the band area. Do not force grip band on until it fits properly.
When forced on, they are very difficult to remove.
5. When fitting crossguards, use a small flat file and make
an effort to keep the crossguard tang hole square like the
original. Be sure when fitting that you allow for a blade
buffer pad if utilized.
6. When installing a pommel nut on political daggers, it
may be necessary to enlarge the grip hole slightly. A small
round file will help complete a neat job.
7. Installing a new scabbard on some daggers may require
fitting the scabbard to the blade. Many times, the scabbard
throat may have to be enlarged to allow the blade to fully
seat. Remove scabbard throat and file the opening so the
blade fits. Do not file scabbard throat without first removing,
as metal shavings inside the scabbard could damage the blade.
Also, shavings will eventually rust. You may want to adjust
the runners if the blade fits too tightly. Do not forget
to turn the upper scabbard screws out (loosen) a turn if
blade does not seat properly. Sometimes, this screw loosening
is all that is needed to secure a proper fit.
