M-1848
Navy Dagger w/Ivory Grip. D. Wiener, Berlin TM. Information
and photographs of this ultra-RARE dagger, worn by
Prussian naval officers and cadets from 1848 through
1872, can be found on pages 20 and 23 -27 of Collecting
the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany. Cast
brass hilt fittings show excellent detail with minor
age patina to the peened flaming ball/reed leaves
with cattails pommel and crossguard with fouled anchor
motif on the quillon block and large quillons. The
solid ivory, eight-sectioned, baluster shaped (lower
half widens toward the top), grip without wire wrap,
shows age toning with light surface wear and hairline
cracks, but no chips. Polished steel, double-etched,
center ridge blade measuring 9 ½" in length
grades VG+ showing wear and gray age/pitting, but
no nicks to the cutting edges or to the slightly rounded
tip. The etch motif is lightly executed, however several
areas of floral motifs are visible. Brass scabbard
shows light wear/age patina with faint depression
on the upper reverse, but no surface scuffs or oxidation.
The scabbard features two, hand enhanced, guilloche
motif suspension bands with a lightning bolt and hand
executed acanthus leaves on the lower shell. The tip
of the scabbard is hand-hammered with a "V"
shaped border at the upper edge. The M-1848 Navy Dagger
is one of the rarest of the Imperial Navy Daggers.
Exc. (24698) $6,500.
