1st Model Navy Dagger w/Hammered
Scabbard, Portepee & Hangers. No maker TM.
See pages 76 - 80 of Collecting the Edged Weapons
of Imperial Germany for information and photographs
on this pattern dagger and scabbard. Based upon
the quality and pattern of the blade this dagger
was probably manufactured as a 1919 or 1921 pattern
dagger, and later fitted with a white grip in accordance
with the June 1929 regulation changes. Gilded brass
hilt fittings show surface wear/age patina with
portions of gilding remaining in the recesses of
the threaded type flaming ball/"waves"
pommel and crossguard with fouled anchor motif on
the obverse quillon block. Off-white celluloid grip
shows minor age discoloration/surface crazing and
one small hairline crack on the lower reverse, but
no chips, and is complete with single twisted brass
wire wrap. Typical low quality, 1919/1921 pattern,
plain plated, center-ridged blade measuring 8 7/8"
in length grades EX showing lifting/graying to obverse/reverse
and a few tiny nicks to blade edges. Blade is complete
with red felt blade buffer pad. The dent-free, gilded-brass,
hammered scabbard shows light surface wear with
portions of gilding remaining hammered recesses
and adjacent to reef knot suspension bands and scabbard
throat which is retained by one, side-mounted, round
head screw. The original to the piece, silver bullion
portepee shows light age patina and minor wear/oxidation,
but no fraying or damage. The early Imperial style
hangers show wear to the facings and velvet backing
and are complete with heavy brass fittings and regain
chain. The upper clips on both the short and long
straps are missing the spring. Nice original piece.
EX+ (25790) $2,600.
