2nd Model Navy Dagger w/Ivory
Grip & Double-Etched/Blued Blade. AWS, scales
(Alcoso Werk, Solingen) with Alcoso SOLINGEN text
placed to the right of the main TM. Fred Stephens
states in the "supplementary notes" to
his facsimile reprint of The ALCOSO Sales Catalogue
(Circa 1937), that the "initials AWS was a
form of trademark introduced to remove the name
of the Coppel family [and] appears to have been
short-lived as it is a scarce variant". Gilded
brass hilt fittings surface wear to the on the highlights
with portions in the recesses of the eagle/swastika
pommel, standard crossguard with fouled anchor on
both obverse and reverse quillon blocks. The genuine
ivory is perfect with light age striations, but
no cracks or chips, and is complete with tight twisted
silver wire wrap. Plated double-etched blade grades
EX+/EX++ showing minor surface wear/runner marks
and a few gray specks to ricassos, but no nicks
to the cutting edges. Blade is complete with red/orange
felt blade buffer pad and retains 100% of the dark
blue/gray background frosting in the fouled anchor
and sailing ship motif etch pattern. Dent-free gilded
brass lightning bolt scabbard shows light wear with
only traces of gilding remaining in the recesses
of the lightning bolt and acanthus leaves motif
with no damage to the well detailed oak-leaf suspension
bands. Scabbard is complete with undamaged dome-head
scabbard throat retaining screws. Nice textbook
Alcoso example with less commonly seen trademark.
