Early SA Dagger. Aesculap
Tuttlingen, crowned snake in the form of an S twisted
around a pole within a double-circle TM. As stated
on page 52 of The Sword And Knife Makers Of Germany
1850-2000 Volume 1 by the late Anthony Carter, "SA
and NSKK daggers were produced with the round Aesculap
marking.". Nickel-silver hilt fittings show
surface wear/age patina/spotting with the reverse
lower crossguard group marked, "Sw" (Sudwest).
Dark-brown, fine-grained wooden grip shows surface
wear to the factory lacquered finish with faint
surface chipping adjacent to the crossguards, but
no cracks. Silver grip eagle and SA insert are properly
inset. Polished blade grades VG+/EX, showing surface
wear/runner marks w/surfacing scratching to the
right edge and lifting to the upper obverse/reverse
adjacent to the lower crossguard. Deeply-etched
motto retains 100% of the light gray background
frosting. Steel scabbard shows uniform surface speckling
and areas of oxidation to the brown anodization
and factory lacquer with a small depression to the
upper left edge of the shell. Nickel-silver scabbard
fittings show surface wear/age patina/spotting matching
the crossguards with a few minor surface depressions
to the fittings and to the underside of the lower
ball. The retaining screws are undamaged. VG+/EX
(26039) $850.
