Chained SS Dagger w/Portepee. No maker. As stated
on pages 28 - 31 of Collecting the Edged Weapons
of the Third Reich, Volume V, 1936
Chained SS daggers produced during the 1936-1937
period can be found with a combination of nickel-silver
& plated fittings, anodized & painted scabbards,
and Type I & Type II chain hangers. This example
exhibits some of the above variations. Nickel-plated
hilt fittings show light surface wear with minor
speckling adjacent to crossguards, but no lifting
or pitting. Black Ebony grip shows light surface
wear one tiny chip and one small hairline crack
to the lower reverse grip adjacent to crossguard,
but no major damage. Aluminum grip eagle and SS
insert are properly inset. Polished blade grades
EX++ showing light surface wear/runner marks and
some faint gray shadowing, but no pitting or nicks
to the cutting edges. Deeply etched motto retains
100% of the light gray background frosting. Dent-free
scabbard retains virtually 100% of the black anodization
and much factory lacquer remaining. Dent-free, nickel-plated
upper, center, and lower scabbard fittings show
minor age unturned scabbard screws and no depressions
to lower ball. Center scabbard band is retained
by two screws as normally seen on anodized scabbards.
Nickel-plated, Type II chain hanger shows minor
age with excellent detail to the chain links and
virtually 100% of factory darkening remaining in
the background. Chain hanger is lightly SS proof
marked on the reverse and the clover leaf is the
non-cut out variety as is proper for Type II chain
hangers. Attached to the grip is an EX+ 42cm aluminum
portepee as authorized for wear by the Waffen SS
(See pages 243-244 of Collecting The Edged
Weapons of The Third Reich Volume III).
Nice early 1936/1937 period Chained SS dagger with
textbook characteristics! Exc++ (25158) $8,750.
