1936 Chained SS Dagger. No
maker. This dagger as well as several other edged
weapons was recently obtained from the widow of
a Florida WW II veteran and retired Army Colonel.
As stated on pages 28 - 31 of Collecting the Edged
Weapons of the Third Reich, Volume V, 1936 Chained
SS daggers produced during the 1936-1937 period
can be found with a combination of nickel-silver
& plated fittings, anodized & painted scabbards,
and Type I & Type II chain hangers. This example
exhibits some of the above variations. Nickel-silver
crossguards and pommel nut show minor surface wear
with minor wear/yellow age patina. Black Ebony grip
shows light surface wear, with a repair on the lower
obverse and reverse and a small hairline crack,
all adjacent to the lower crossguard, but no damage
to the properly inset silver grip eagle and SS insert.
Mirror polished blade grades EX+ showing light runner
marks, minor gray shadowing/speckling several tiny
nicks to the cutting edges, but no pitting or damage
to the blade tip. Dent-free steel scabbard retains
approximately 95% of the original satin-finish black
enamel with minor wear/chipping where chain hanger
has rubbed against the scabbard shell. Nickel-silver
upper, center, and lower scabbard fittings show
light age patina with a few small depressions to
the reverse lower fitting and three small depressions
to the lower ball, but no splitting to the seam,
and no damage to the scabbard screws. The center
scabbard band with much factory darkening is retained
by one screw as normally seen on painted scabbards.
Solid-nickel, non-magnetic Type II chain hanger
features excellent detail to the chain links with
portions of factory darkening remaining in the background.
Chain hanger is lightly SS proof marked on the reverse
and features the non-cutout cloverleaf and beveled
upper connectors. EX+/EX++ (26286) $7,500.
