Army Officer Dagger w/Portepee. Puma Solingen, (Lauterjung
& Sohn) Puma head w/o diamond over Puma Solingen
TM. As stated on page 92 of Exploring the Dress
Daggers of the German Army by Thomas T. Wittmann,
"Puma did not make any parts but finished raw
parts purchased from other casters". This dagger
is an example of this practice. Silver-plated hilt
fittings show minor surface wear with light age
patina to the oak leaf embellished pommel and generic
crossguard as shown in the above reference. Reverse
crossguard is jeweler engraved, "'In Treue
Fest' 1. IV. 1942 M".(Steadfast with Loyalty
01 April 1942 M.) in capital letters. Light orange,
solid celluloid grip shows minor surface wear with
no cracks or chips and lightly age toned darker
on the obverse. Polished blade grades EX+ showing
light runner marks/surface wear with light gray
shadowing and some gray spotting near tip, but no
nicks to the cutting edges and is complete with
brown/black leather blade buffer pad. Dent-free,
silver-plated scabbard shows superb detail to the
pebbled shell with only light surface wear/age patina
with the two dome-head type screws and thicker throat
normally associated with Hörster produced Army
scabbards. See pages 37- 41 of the above reference.
Dagger is complete with original 42cm portepee in
EX+ condition with light wear, but no fraying to
the cord or acorn. Nice Puma example recently obtained
from an Arizona estate sale. EX++ (23925) $945.
