Third
Reich Hunting Hirschfänger w/Frog. No maker.
Although this Hirschfänger is unmarked, the
blade etch motif matches the style shown in the
Eickhorn Kundendienst on their Hirschfänger
Nr. 1692. Silver-plated hilt fittings show minor
wear with dark age patina to the fluted pommel cap,
recurved crossguard with stag hoof quillons and
fluted clamshell. Factory darkening remains in the
recesses of the hilt fittings and much factory lacquer
remains on the crossguard. Dark brown stag horn
grip is perfect with no cracks or chips and is complete
with silver-over-bronze Hunting Association emblem
showing minor wear to silver plate properly pinned
to the obverse. Plated double-etched blade grades
excellent++/Near MINT showing light runner marks
with some very faint shadowing near the tip of blade
but no lifting or pitting or nicks to cutting edge.
Etch panels feature standard Hunting scene of hunter
with hunting dogs attacking a boar on obverse and
hunter, stag, and doe on reverse. Blade is complete
with green felt buffer pad and shows only runner
marks to the light gray background frosting in the
etch panels. Green leather scabbard shows light
surface wear and some loss of color but no rips,
tears, or creases. Dent-free silver-plated scabbard
fittings retain much of the original factory lacquer
showing specks of dark age patina where lacquer
has worn. Hirschfänger is complete with dark
green leather frog in excellent++ condition showing
only minor loss of color but no rips, tears, or
damage to the stitching. Nice Eickhorn pattern example
recently obtained from a long established Virginia
collection. Exc++ (22847) $1,995.
