Catalogue/Edged Weapons/Daggers/Hunting, Forestry, Rifle Association

National Forestry Service [Reichsforstdienst]
The National Forestry Service was organized to control and preserve the natural resources of Germany's abundant national forests. The primary objective of the Forestry Service was the administration of all matters concerning timber and wildlife conservation. Hermann Göring "wore two hats" in heading both the National Forestry Service and the National Hunting Association. The Forestry Service was charged with prescribing game laws and hunting regulations. The actual police of the forests was delegated (as it is today) to regional or district Forstmeisters (Foresters), who were highly trained, full time government representatives. The role of the Foresters is similiar to the familiar role of game wardens in our own country. Large private land owners were required to hire forestry officials at their own expense in order to safeguard their estate from poachers.

German Rifle Association [Deutscher Schutzen-Verband]
The German Rifle Association was a non-political, non-military, organization of volunteer members who were interested in marksmanship. The association was similiar in nature and scope to the National Rifle Association (NRA) existing in the United States today.
The primary objective of the German Rifle Association was to promote interest among the civilian populous in competitive sport shooting. Local subordinate clubs were organized throughout Germany, and competitive shooting events were common. The handsome awards at these events ran the gamut from badges to trophies to ornate silver trays and constitute sought-after collectibles today. As the Nazis infiltrated the Association, the earlier social events absorbed definite political overtones.
