2nd Model Luftwaffe
Dagger w/Portepee. ROBT KLAAS SOLINGEN, beneath
two small stamped side-by-side storks TM. This Klaas
example was recently obtained from the grandson
of WWII veteran, T/5 Gaylord B. Peterson who served
in the European Theater with the 5th Armored Division.
Included with the dagger is a photocopy of photographs
of T/5 Peterson, as well as a brief history of the
5th Armored Division in WWII. As stated on page
186 or the Robert Klaas firm purchased its Luftwaffe
fittings from other makers and casters. This dagger
is an example of this practice. Hilt fittings retain
virtually 100% of the dark factory finish to the
pommel with much of the factory finish remaining
in the recesses of the crossguard with the incised
oak leaves as often seen on Klaas 2nd Model Luftwaffe
Daggers. The pommel features hand enhancing to the
outer area between the border and the oak leaves
as p[ictured on page 141 of Exploring the Dress
Daggers of the German Luftwaffe by Thomas T. Wittmann.
Light yellow, solid celluloid grip shows faint surface
wear with, but no cracks or chips and is complete
with tight twisted wire wrap. Plated blade grades
EX++ showing light gray shadowing and surface wear/runner
marks, but no pitting or nicks to cutting edges,
and is complete with brown leather buffer pad. Dent-free
scabbard as pictured on page 178, third from left
of the above reference, shows wear to the factory
darkening with nice contrast to the aluminum suspension
bands with well detailed oak leaf motif. The scabbard
throat is retained by two domed dead side screws
as illustrated in the above reference. The 23cm
portepee grades VG+ showing wear to acorn and cord
which is attached to the wire base that has been
pulled from the stem/slide. Nice veteran estate
acquired Klaas example with documentation. EX+ (26008)
$695. SOLD
