Aluminum hilt fittings show light surface wear with factory darkening remaining in the recesses of the well detailed Eickhorn "heart-shaped" pommel and eagle & swastika crossguard with Eickhorn style incised oakleaves on upper surface of the quillons. Pommel swastikas retain virtually 100% of the original factory gold wash while the crossguard is near black with age residue and factory darkening. Medium orange celluloid grip shows virtually no wear with no cracks or chips and is complete with tight springy aluminum wire wrap. Polished blade grades Near MINT showing faint runner marks, some minor gray speckling, but with much cross-graining remaining and no nicks to the cutting edges. Reverse blade is jeweler engraved in gothic letters with the presentation inscription, "Schiesspreise 1943" (Shooting Prize 1943). Presentation inscription retains 100% of the dark gray background frosting. Obverse blade is jeweler engraved with the unit symbol of Kampfgeschwader "Geschwader Boelcke", "K.G. 27". The symbol consists of a winged Luftwaffe sword placed diagonally on a stippled shield above the name, "Geschwader Boelcke". The unit was named to honor the WWI Ace Oswald Boelcke. Prior to his death on 28 October 1916, Boelcke was credited with 40 kills and had received the Pour le Merite for his aerial victories. Blade is complete with blue leather blade buffer pad. Steel scabbard retains virtually 100% of the original factory finish and is complete with well detailed Eickhorn pattern suspension bands and is complete with the thicker variety throat usually found on Eickhorn examples which is retained by two headless side screws. Scabbard shows several faint surface depressions on both lower obverse and reverse. Dagger is complete with original 23cm portepee in excellent condition showing age and wear with minor fraying to the cord. Exc++.(27366) $1,765. SOLD
