Hirschfänger w/Deluxe Fittings, Unique Clamshell
& Brocade Belt/Frog. ®No maker. Gilded,
cast-brass hilt fittings show light surface wear
with much matte honey-gold factory finish remaining
on the floral motif domed pommel cap with a raised
oval "droplet" outer border, oak leaf
embellished ferrule, and recurved crossguard with
raised floral motif quillons flanking a fox and
running doe on the obverse/reverse quillon block.
The deluxe, well detailed, clamshell features a
cast floral motif border surrounding a large, raised
vulture-type bird atop, and pecking a devil's head/mask.
The vulture and mask are attached to the clamshell
by a screw and tap on the underside. The medium
brown, stag horn grip, without acorns or other decoration,
is perfect with no cracks or chips. The plain, plated
single-edged/single-fuller blade measuring 17 5/8"
in length grades EX/EX+, showing surface wear/age,
shadowing/speckling and minor surface crazing but,
no nicks to the cutting edge, and is complete with
original green felt buffer pad. The black leather
scabbard shows wear/age with some surface cracking
but, no creases, rips or tears and no damage to
the reverse stitching. The upper and lower gilded
brass deluxe fittings retain much of the factory
gilding to the raised floral motifs with the upper
fitting complete with a frog stud decorated with
a large oak leaf. The dent-free, deluxe upper fitting
with raised floral motif on the obverse is formed
to accept the 7 ¼" long skinning knife
with undamaged dark brown horn grip and EX plated
blade showing some lifting and gray speckling. The
dent-free, deluxe obverse lower fitting features
raised floral motifs flanking a central oval motif
of hunting equipment to include rifle, hirschfänger,
horn and hunting bag. The reverse lower fitting
features upper and lower raised floral panels with
a scratch and small depression to the plain central
area. The silver bullion with central green stripe,
over leather backing, belt and frog grade EX showing
wear/age patina to the bullion, fading to the green
stripe and wear/age to the leather backing. The
belt is complete with a horizontal, "S"
shaped, vulture-head buckle attached to brass acorn
and oak-leaf keepers. Based upon the silver bullion
with green stripe combination, the hirschfänger
is probably related to the Kingdom of Saxony which
used gold/silver bullion with green stripes/highlights
on uniforms, uniform accouterments and medal ribbons.
RARE hirschfänger! EX+/EX++ (26720) $2,850.
