M-1929 Navy Dagger w/Depot Markings.
WKC, knight's helmet TM. For more information on
the Model 1929, 1st Pattern Navy dagger, see page
80 of Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany,
Volume I, by LTC (Ret.) Thomas M. Johnson and Thomas
T. Wittmann. Gilded brass hilt fittings show light
surface wear/age patina to the highlights with virtually
100% of factory matte-finish gilding remaining in
the recesses of the flaming ball/wave-type pommel
and crossguard with fouled anchor design. Off-white,
nicely age toned, celluloid-over-wood grip shows
minor surface wear, with no cracks or chips, and
is complete with tight, twisted brass wire wrap.
Plain, double-fullered plated blade grades EX++/Near
MINT, showing only faint surface wear on obverse/reverse
ricassos, but no gray shadowing or nicks to cutting
edges. Reverse ricasso is stamped with the control
number, "N 903", indicating this dagger
was the property of "Nordseestation",
headquartered in Wilhelmshaven, and is additionally
stamped with the Weimar eagle over a script "M"
Depot stam, and complete with original brown leather
blade buffer pad. The blade is equipped with a blade
locking device, but no push-button activator is
housed in the crossguard. The gilded, brass, lightning
bolt pattern scabbard shows light surface wear with
portions of gilding remaining adjacent to scabbard
bands with a small depression on the center obverse
shell. Scabbard is complete with reef knot style
scabbard suspension bands, with the reef knot only
on the obverse. Reverse upper scabbard is marked
with a matching "N 903" Depot stamp. Photographs
of this dagger appear on pages 244 -247 of "Deutsche
Marinedolche" by Hermann Hampe and Vic Diehl.
Nice textbook example of a WKC M-1929 pattern Navy
dagger with Depot markings. EX+/EX++ (25935) $2,450.
