Early SS Officer's Sword w/SS-RZM
Marked Hanger. No Maker. This early example
was recently obtained in Germany. Nickel-silver
hilt fittings show light surface wear/age age patina
with no damage/cracks to pommel or to the knuckle-bow/crossguard.
Pommel features the early, threaded pommel cap fitted
into the separate "stepped" plate/fitting
nut as shown on page 352 of Exploring The Dress
Daggers and Swords of the German SS by Thomas T.
Wittmann. Underside of crossguard is properly stamped
with the SS proofmark. Black wooden grip with tight
silver wire wrap shows uniform surface wear to the
black factory finish, but no cracks or chips. The
silver SS Runes insert is properly inset into the
center obverse grip and retains 99% of the black
factory background darkening. Polished, matte finish
blade measuring 29 ¾" in length, grades
EX/EX+ showing light surface wear and gray shadowing
with faint dulling to the tip, but no pitting or
nicks to cutting edge, and is complete with white
leather blade buffer pad. Dent-free, steel scabbard
retains approximately 98% of the original black
enamel with minor surface scratches and specks of
crazing, but no major loss of enamel. Dent-free,
upper and lower nickel-plated scabbard fittings
show minor wear/age with much of the black enamel
remaining in the recesses of the lower incised motif
and light wear background of the upper scrollwork
motif. Scabbard throat is SS proofmarked. The original
sword hanger grades EX++ showing minor age to the
black leather, 17" long, strap with a nickel-plated,
metal upper box-type fitting and regain chain and
"oLc" marked, black enamel lower clip.
Reverse lower strap is "SS L2/682/38 RZM"
marked. A photograph of a similar hanger appears
or page 639 lower of the above reference. NOTE:
JRB&M has not and will not dissemble this sword
to inspect for internal markings. Nice original
combination with RARE SS marked hanger. EX++ (26076)
$12,500. ***SOLD***
