Third
Reich Lion Cavalry Sword w/Unique Scabbard &
RARE Personalized Saddle Hanger. Carl Eickhorn,
stamped squirrel inside double oval TM. An illustration
of this pattern sword appears in the Eickhorn Kundendienst
as Patent=Offiziersäbel Nr. 1312. Early gilded
brass hilt fittings show wear to highlights with
virtually 100% of the muted, honey-gold, fire gilding
remaining in the recesses of the lion head pommel
with red glass eyes, oak leaf embellished backstrap,
knuckle-bow and ferrule, as well as crossguard with
heavily chased crossed swords and oak leaves on
the obverse langet. Black celluloid-over-wood grip
shows minor surface wear, but no cracks, chips or
damage, and is complete with triple, twisted brass
wire wrap. Plated blade measuring 34 7/8" in
length grades EX+ showing minor surface wear/runner
marks, faint age speckling, and several tiny "pecks"
to cutting edge and is complete with brown leather
blade buffer pad. Early pattern steel scabbard with
two suspension rings retains approximately 95% of
the unique, matte, olive-drab enamel with one small
depression on the upper obverse approximately one
inch below the scabbard throat. The RARE saddle
mounted hanger is similar to the example pictured
on page 321, left of Swords of Germany 1900/1945
by John R. Angolia. The brown leather hanger grades
EX+ showing light wear/age, but no rips, tears or
other damage. The hanger features a 4" X 9"
rectangular back flap with a buckled strap at the
top to attach the hanger to the saddle with a buckled
strap and stitched pocket on the lower flap to secure
the sword scabbard. The reverse of the back flap
is personalized with the handwritten, block letters,
"C C". RARE combination recently obtained
in Germany. EX+ (26159) $950.
