KS/98 Bayonet w/Single-Etched Blade & Frog.
No maker. Although unmarked, the etch pattern on
this bayonet matches a motif pictured on page 227,
upper of German Etched Dress Bayonets by
Wayne H. Techet as an example of a pre-1938 Robert
Klaas bayonet. Nickel-plated hilt fittings show
surface wear/speckling with loss of plating primarily
to edges of pommel and on small spot on the reverse
crossguard. Pommel slot is complete with red felt
plug. in pommel slot. Black bakelite grip plates
are perfect with no cracks or chips. Plated blade
measuring 24.9cm in length grades Exc++ showing
minor runner marks, but no crazing, loss of plating
or no nicks to cutting edge and is complete with
original black leather blade buffer pad. Obverse
blade features a 5 ½" long etched panel
with the distinctive Klaas curled cross bookend
borders flanking a highly defined Wehrmacht helmet
at the point end and a "stubby" open-winged
eagle, unique to the Klaas firm. Etched panel retains
a100% of the original factory background frosting.
Dent-free, steel scabbard retains approximately
95% of the original black enamel showing only a
few spots of wear to the obverse shell and lower
ball. Black leather, double-stitched frog shows
surface wear and some heat crazing to the patent
leather finish.Exc+
