Long KS/98 Bayonet w/RARE Single-Etched
Blade & Frog. E. Pack & Söhne Solingen,
large Siegfried Waffen TM. Photographs of this rare
etch pattern appear on page 151 of German Etched
Dress Bayonets by Wayne H. Techet. Nickel-plated
hilt fittings show light surface wear with some
light gray speckling to the obverse pommel and two
spots of oxidation/lifting to the reverse pommel
and upper spine, but no damage to the crossguard.
Pommel slot is complete with a brown felt plug which,
as indicated on page 249 of Collecting The Edged
Weapons Of The Third Reich Vol IV, was worn by Aviation
communications personnel. Black Bakelite grip plates
are perfect with no cracks or chips and feature
the off-set screws as used by the Pack firm. Plated
blade measuring 24cm in length grades EX+ showing
light surface wear/runner marks with wear to plating
near obverse tip, but no nicks to cutting edge and
is complete with dark brown leather buffer pad.
Obverse blade features E. Pack & Söhne
1938 catalog motif Nr. 4, "Flieger" comprised
of a 6" long gray frosted panel with two-line
remembrance of service time inscription, "ZUR
ERINNERUNG AN MEINE DIENSTZEIT" in block letters
flanked on the left by a floral etch and on the
right by the raised motif of a Heinkel HE-46C aircraft.
The etched panel retains 100% of the frosted background
finish. Dent-free, steel scabbard retains approximately
90% of the original black enamel showing light surface
wear/crazing, a spot of oxidation on the center
obverse and missing paint to the lower ball. Black,
double-stitched frog brown reverse grades EX+ showing
light wear/age, and the obverse appears to have
been period dyed. but no damage to the stitching.
