Rare
S-98/05 P.S.S. Police Bayonet w/Unique Frog.
Dürkopp-Werke A.G., stamped tower inside "D"
within facsimile of a triangular maker's tag. As
stated on pages 163-164 of Seitengewehre: History
of the German Bayonet 1919-1945 by George T. Wheeler,
this rare pattern Polizei-Seitengewehr Sonderausführung
(Police bayonet special model) was fashioned from
a modified S-98/05 bayonet which had been adopted
by the Imperial German Army in 1905 and used during
WWI. As Mr. Wheeler states, "The exact purpose
of these bayonets has not been established, but
in all likelihood they are simply another Police
variation." Nickel plated hilt fittings feature
acid etched oak leaves and acorns on the pommel
and crossguard showing only light surface wear with
perfect background etching around the oak leaf motif.
Bayonet hilt slot is complete with green felt plug.
Medium brown stag horn grip plates are perfect with
no cracks or chips and complete with Third Reich
Police grip emblem properly attached to the obverse
plate. Plated single-fullered blade measuring 14
½" in length grades excellent+/excellent++
showing light surface wear/runner marks and a few
specks of faint crazing, but no lifting, pitting,
or nicks to cutting edge. Blade is complete with
a unique brass blade buffer pad which has been anodized
brown to resemble leather. Steel scabbard retaining
approximately 95% of the original black enamel shows
minor surface wear/crazing on both obverse &
reverse, with one small pinhead size depression
to the lower obverse. Apparently, the scabbard was
manufactured with a separate metal ball which has
broken away and lost to time. Bayonet is complete
with unique dark brown leather double-stitched 4-rivet
frog which features a 3" wide upper section
with two factory machine slits so the frog may be
slipped onto a waist belt. Superb example of a rare
Third Reich Police bayonet! Exc+/Exc++ (22898) PRICE
