Long Third
Reich Municipal Police Bayonet w/Frog & Bayonet
Knot. No maker. Nickel-plated hilt fittings
show minor surface wear, but no lifting or pitting
to the well detailed eagle head pommel with pommel
slot and oak leaf embellished crossguard, but with
dark oxidation to the operating obverse/reverse
lug button show dark oxidation. The pommel slot
is complete with dark green felt plug. The reverse
crossguard is without markings as they were apparently
ground off at the time the clamshell was removed
and blade shortened after the SS assumed control
of the Police in June 1936. The hilt spine is stamped,
"F 62" (Frankfurt weapon 62). Medium brown
stag horn grip plates show light surface wear/age
toning, but no cracks or chips with Third Reich
Police grip emblem properly pinned to the obverse
plate. Grip plates show evidence of being cut down
during refurbishing as vestiges of the original
lower rivet holes remain on both the obverse and
reverse plates. Plated blade measuring 32.8cm in
length grades EX/EX+ with runner marks/surface wear,
light gray shadowing, with light grinding marks/minor
surface pitting near the blade tip where blade was
shortened, but no nicks to cutting edge. Spine of
blade is stamped with the matching "F 62"
number and complete with brown leather buffer pad.
Black leather scabbard shows light surface wear/minor
swelling, but no creases, rips or tears, and no
damage to the reverse stitching. Nickel-plated scabbard
fittings show light surface wear with two faint
depressions to the obverse lower fitting, but no
depressions to the lower ball. The lower fitting
is complete with retaining staple and is stamped
beneath the staple with the number, "10";
the upper fitting staple is hidden under the frog.
The right edge of the upper scabbard fitting is
stamped "F R 11". The scabbard was apparently
switched at the time the blade was cut down. Black
leather, double-stitched, frog grades EX showing
much crazing to the original patent leather finish
with wear/moth damage to the original feldgrau felt
covering on the reverse frog. The original Police
NCO bayonet knot grades EX++ showing faint wear/age
to the fabric strap with light fraying to slide,
but no damage to the stem or silver/green crown/acorn
and green insert. EX+/EX++ (26200) $895.
