Short KS/98 Bayonet w/Single-Etched Blade &
Frog. E. & F. Hörster Solingen, sword within
"H" double-oval TM. A photograph of this
etch pattern appears on page 137, upper of German
Etched Dress Bayonets by Wayne H. Techet
with the notation that the Hörster firm probably
contracted with F. W. Höller to produce this
bayonet. However, in this instance, Hörster
must have contracted with or purchased parts from
the E. Pack Firm as the hilt features the offset
grip screws used E. Pack. Nickel-plated hilt fittings
show speckling to plating primarily on the obverse
and underside of the pommel with no major lifting.
Pommel slot complete with green felt plug. Black
bakelite grip plates show one spot of wear on lower
reverse plate, but cracks or chips. Plated blade
measuring 19.2 cm in length grades VG+/Exc. showing
wear/runner marks with some minor pitting to ricasso
and slight sharpening to blade (has not damaged
etch), but no nicks to cutting edge and is complete
with original black leather blade buffer pad. Obverse
blade features an etch pattern similar to the Höller
pattern Nr. ES 102 with bookend border pattern,
standard remembrance inscription flanked by an open
wing Wehrmacht eagle with oak leaves at the point
end and a helmet over oak leaves nearest the ricasso.
Etch panel retains 100% of the original factory
background frosting. Dent-free steel scabbard retains
approximately 65% of the original black enamel showing
uniform surface wear to obverse/reverse of shell
and lower ball. Black leather frog in VG+ condition
with much crazing to patent leather finish. Exc.
(24636) $595.
