Short KS/98 Bayonet w/Single-Etched Blade, Frog
& Portepee. WKC knight's helmet TM. This
bayonet, recently obtained in Austria, is complete
with frog & portepee. Nickel-plated hilt fittings
show light surface wear/age crazing with one minor
spot of wear to the reverse crossguard where crossguard
has rubbed against the frog. Black bakelite grip
plates are perfect with no cracks or chips. Pommel
slot is complete with green felt plug. Plated single-etched
blade grades excellent++ showing only minor surface
wear with a few specks of gray shadowing on obverse
ricasso. An example of the obverse blade etch pattern
consisting of a 5 3/8" long frosted panel with
raised oak leaf border, service time remembrance
inscription, and central open wing eagle is pictured
on page 235 of German Etched Dress Bayonets by Wayne
H. Techet. As indicated in the above reference,
this blade was most likely produced for WKC by their
supplier of etched dress bayonets, the F. W. Höller
company. Blade is complete wbrown leather blade
buffer pad. Dent-free steel scabbard retains approximately
95% of the original black enamel showing only light
surface wear/crazing with loss of enamel to lower
ball. Bayonet is complete with black patent leather
frog showing much age crazing and dulling to the
patent leather finish. Attached to the frog is an
original green/silver NCO portepee in excellent+
