Personalized 2nd Model Navy Dagger w/Broken "Surrender" Blade, Portepee & Hangers. WKC, stamped knight's helmet TM. This veteran acquired Navy example was no doubt manufactured as a 1929 pattern dagger, and later fitted with a 1938 replacement pommel as pictured on page 229, left, of Exploring the Dress Daggers of the German Navy by Thomas T. Wittmann. Gilted brass hilt fittings show light surface wear to the highlights with factory gilting remaining in the recesses of the eagle & swastika pommel facing backwards and fouled anchor crossguard. Off-white, age toned, celluloid-over-wood grip shows minor surface wear with no cracks or chips and is complete with tight twisted brass wire wrap. Plated double-etched blade is broken 4 ½ inches below the crossguard and is personalized on the obverse ricasso with the engraved, script initials, "CJ". Blade is complete with tan leather buffer pad. Dent-free, gilted brass, hammered scabbard shows minor wear/age patina to highlights with factory gilting remaining in the recesses of the hammered pattern. Scabbard is complete with oak leaf suspension band and early smooth style eyelets. Silver bullion portepee showing showing dark age toning throughout the cord/stem/acorn grades Exc+ and dagger is complete with Exc+/Exc++ black moire' hangers with minor wear to fabric and age to fittings. Research in Die Deutsche Kriegsmarine 1939 - 1945 reveals that the only two Navy officers with the initials, "CJ", and survived the war to "surrender" a dagger, were Claus Jacob and Carl Jacobi. Background documentation on these two officers is included with the dagger. Exc+/Exc++ (24510) $1,250.
