Early 1936 Chained SS Dagger w/Portepee & Teardrop Hanger. No maker. As stated on pages 121 - 135 of Exploring The Dress Daggers and Swords of the German SS by Thomas T. Wittmann, "The initial production 1936 Chained SS daggers were normally equipped nickel-silver hilt fittings.…The ebony colored grips, complete with their nickel national insignia and SS enameled runes, are of the same fine quality as found on the model 1933 SS weapon. [and] The "Type II" chain [hanger] was initially produced of solid nickel-silver metal". Nickel-silver hilt fittings and pommel nut show light surface wear/age patina with properly unmarked reverse lower crossguard. Black, ebony colored grip shows light surface wear with a hairline crack on the upper obverse and reverse adjacent to the crossguard, but no chips or other damage. Nickel-silver grip eagle and SS insert are properly inset. Mirror polished blade grades Exc+/Exc++ showing light surface wear/runner marks and a few tiny gray specks on obverse left cutting edge, but no pitting or nicks to cutting edges. Deeply etched motto retains 100% of the light gray background frosting and blade exhibits the perfect grip-to-crossguard fit associated with early daggers. Dent-free, steel scabbard retains approximately 98% of black enamel showing minor surface crazing with virtually only a few specks of surface oxidation/missing paint. Dent-free, solid nickel upper, center, and lower scabbard fittings show light surface wear/age patina with only one minor depression to the underside of the lower ball. Center scabbard band is retained by a single screw as normally seen on painted scabbards, and with no damage to the retaining screws. Solid nickel, Type II chain hanger features excellent detail to the chain links with portions of factory darkening remaining in the background. Chain hanger is lightly SS proof marked on the reverse and the clover leaf is the non-cut out variety as is proper for Type II chain hangers. Attached to the grip is an Exc+ 42cm aluminum portepee as authorized for wear by the Waffen SS (See pages 243-244 of Collecting The Edged Weapons of The Third Reich Volume III). The RARE black leather teardrop hanger grades Near MINT/MINT and is stamped on the reverse, "SS 48/39 RZM". Nice early example with all accouterments! Exc+/Exc++ (24374) $10,750.
