Research in the 1892 Imperial German Army ranklist indicates that the sword was probably presented to Leutnant Roos, a member of Feld=Artillerie=Regiment von Holzendorff (1. Rheinisches) Nr. 8. by Leutnant Bräutigam who was assigned as an Artillery Officer to Landwehr=Bezirk Hannover (Landwehr District Hannover).

Both obverse and reverse blade feature a series of eight, oval panels featuring facsimile portraits of famous German statesmen and military officers on gilt backgrounds. Facsimile portraits include; Kaiser Wilhelm I, Graf von Bismarck, General von Falkenhayn, Feldmarschall von Steinmetz, Graf von Moltke and Prinz Friedrich Karl of Prussia.

Both obverse and reverse blade feature 3 7/8" long gilt and stippled gray panels, adjacent to the gilted ricasso. Obverse panel features a the monogram "LS" in stylized gilt letters beneath a gilt Prussian crown while the reverse panel features two gilt coats of arms beneath a gilt crown.

Obverse blade features a 13 ½" long frosted panel with an ornate raised floral motif flanking the central gray frosted panel inscribed, "Weihnachten 1914" (Christmas 1914) in raised Gothic letters. Reverse blade features a matching 13 ½" long frosted panel with an ornate raised floral motif flanking the central presentation, "Von seinen Unteroffizieren." Pommel nut is professionally engraved with the initials of the original owner, “W. H.” on either side of a caduceus, the symbol of the medical profession. Grip is complete with Imperial “WR2” cypher pinned to the obverse. Obverse blade features floral panels, as well as the royal cypher, “W2” with Imperial crown flanking a blued presentation panel. The presentation panel features the following inscription: “Dem Stabarztd. Landwehr Dr Hansberg zum 25 Jahr. Offizier-Jubiläum” (to Landwehr Medical Officer Dr. Hansberg on his 25-year anniversary as an officer). Reverse blade features a floral motif with a facsimile profile of Kaiser Wilhelm flanking a blued center panel, with the inscription, “Offizier-Verein I Dortmund”. Lower portion of blade features plated “rosebud” Damascus pattern. The Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt I fielded two regiments of cavalry for the Imperial German Army; the 1st and 2nd Grand Ducal Hessen Dragoon Regiments garrisoned in Darmstadt. Illustrations of this pattern Cavalry Degen appear in both the Imperial Eickhorn and WK&C Sales catalogs and match exactly the Prussian Degen with the exception of the Hessen rampant lion on the hand guard in lieu of the Prussian Eagle.

This sword is personalized on the blade etch to Husaren = Regiment von Zeiten (Brandenburgisches) No. 3. This regiment, raised in 1730, was the first Hussar Regiment organized and was garrisoned at Rathenow, approximately 70 km West of Berlin.

On the obverse is deep, acid-etched floral motif, with the center having crossed swords. Reverse has the floral motif deeply etched, running about 14" down the panel. In the center is a smooth presentation area where the following is engraved, "Unserem lieben Oberleutnant Jagerung von Lutzow 1929" (To our dear 1st Lieutenant, Hunting Group von Lutzow 1929). This is beautifully jeweler engraved in the finest manner. Spine of the blade is also nicely engraved. Quality engraved blades of this type are a work-of-art, and would be a centerpiece of any serious sword collector.
