Deluxe Presentation Imperial Fire Axe w/Ivory Handle.
No maker. A similar deluxe Fire axe with ivory handle
is shown on pages 192 & 193 of Collecting the
Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany as well as in
the 1908 Eickhorn sales catalog. Deeply etched nickel-plated
Fire axe head showing light wear/age with no lifting
features a floral motif on both obverse and reverse
with a motif of fire equipment (ladder, hooks and
hoses) on the base of the axe head. Black ebony
upper handle shows light wear with several age cracks
but no chips or other damage and is complete with
a floral etch plaque on one side and a presentation
plaque on the opposite side. Five-line presentation
is jeweler engraved in script letters, "Ehrengeschenk
für den 1. Brandmeister Ed. Lauerland Gestiftet
von der Mitgliedern der Hohenlunburger Freiw. Feuerwehr
1880-1907" (Honor Gift for the 1. Fire Chief
Ed. Lauerland Presented by the Members of the Hohenlunburger
Fire Department 1880-1907). Lower half of the handle
is constructed of solid fluted ivory with upper
and lower ribbed and checkered brass ferrules and
complete with large brass ball at the lower end.
Ivory handle shows only light surface wear/age with
no cracks or chips with only light age patina to
the brass fittings. Attached to the upper handle
approximately 1 ½" below the axe head
are two brass carrying rings. Attached to one of
the rings is a black leather belt loop with brass
D-ring, chain, and spring clip. Superb ivory handled
deluxe presentation Fire axe recently obtained in
Germany that could most likely be researched. Exc++
