Navy Officer's Dirk w/Glass-Like Grip.No maker.
This superb miniature that measures 11" in
overall length was possibly designed to be worn
with the officer's Mess uniform was recently obtained
in Germany. For more information on these miniature
dirks see pages 169-176 of Exploring the Dress Daggers
of the German Navy by Thomas T. Wittmann. Gilded
brass hilt fittings show minor surface wear with
much matte, honey gold factory gilding remaining
in recesses of open crown pommel with "squared",
engraved cross on top of crown and large capstan
style crossguard with heavy quillon block and raised
anchor motif. Pale-yellow, solid-celluloid, glass-like
grip is perfect, with no cracks or chips and complete
with tight twisted brass wire wrap. Plated, double-fullered,
blade measuring 6 ¼" in length with
1 ¼" long ricasso grades EX++/Near MINT
showing only faint surface wear with a tiny crimp
to blade tip, but no pitting or nicks to cutting
edges. The blade is without a buffer pad. Dent-free,
gilded brass, lightening-bolt scabbard grades EX++/Near
MINT showing light surface wear with some minor
speckling to the center obverse shell with portions
of matte, honey gold factory gilding remaining in
recesses of lightening-bolt pattern. The scabbard
is complete with double-suspension bands which retain
100% of the matte gold gilding on the raised, oak
leaf and acorn motif within raised borders on a
pebbled background. Superb Imperial miniature ¾"
