Personalized Guatemalan Dagger
w/Hangers. No Maker. Although this pattern dagger
is not described or pictured in any reference books
in the JRB&M library, it is possibly a Guatemalan
Air Force dagger. The uncleaned silver plated hilt
fittings show surface wear/dark age patina to the
raised pommel nut, plain pommel/back strap, ferrule
and straight crossguard. The obverse langet in the
form of outstretched wings, closely resembles US
Air Force pilot's wings. Molded into the center
of the wings is a raised shield divided into three
vertical enameled sections; blue/white/blue, the
configuration of the colors of the Guatemalan flag.
The central section has a small spot of wear to
the white enamel. The black enameled, wood, six-sectioned
grip shows minor wear to the enamel, but no cracks
of chips and is complete with tight twisted wire
wrap. The plated, single-edged, Bowie-style blade
measuring 10" in length grades EX+ showing
surface wear/runner marks and minor gray speckling,
but no nicks to cutting edge. The obverse blade
is personalized in lightly engraved script letters,
"Col Rlm Indoza Guatemala". The blade
is without a buffer pad and there is no indication
one was ever present. The straight, silver-plated,
convex scabbard shows surface wear/uncleaned dark
age patina matching the hilt fittings with one faint
depression to the lower reverse shell, but no lifting
or pitting to finish. The scabbard features an applied
upper fitting with upper and center suspension bands
with two engraved lines and suspension rings. A
simulated lower fitting is etched into the lower
shell and complete with undamaged lower ball. The
black leather, double-strap hangers show light age/wear
to the leather, but no rips or tears, and are complete
with silver-plated upper clip/fitting, rectangular
buckles and lower spring clips. The hanger fittings
show dark age patina matching the hilt fittings
and scabbard. Given the small size of the Guatemalan
Air Force, this dagger with personalization must
be quite RARE. EX+ (26309) $950. HOLD
