Carl Eickhorn, serrated-tail squirrel above C.E. within double-oval TM. As stated on page 190 of Collecting the Edged Weapons of the Third Reich Volume III, “This mark is believed to have been introduced in 1934-1935”. Nickel-plated hilt fittings show minor surface wear, but no lifting, oxidation or pitting to the well detailed eagle head pommel without pommel slot and oak leaf embellished crossguard. The reverse crossguard is unmarked (marking possibly removed at the time the clamshell was removed and blade shortened after the SS assumed control of the Police in June 1936). Medium brown stag horn grip plates show light surface wear/age toning, but no cracks or chips, and with Third Reich Police grip emblem properly pinned to the obverse plate. Grip plates show no evidence of being cut down and were possibly replaced during refurbishing. Plated blade measuring 33cm in length grades EX++ with minor runner marks and some minor discoloration near the blade tip where blade was shortened but, no nicks to cutting edge. Spine of blade is marked with the Prussian police acceptance stamp consisting of a small sunburst above the letter “K”, and is complete with black leather buffer pad. Black leather scabbard shows minor surface wear/age, but no creases, rips or tears, and no damage to the reverse stitching. Dent-free nickel-plated scabbard fittings show minor surface wear with no damage to the lower ball, and are complete with boyh retaining staples. The reverse upper scabbard fitting is stamped “S.An.68.” (Schutzpolizei/Municipal police) of Administrative District Aachen, weapon number “68”). Nice Eickhorn example that was shortened and up-dated for use during the Third Reich.
