Description

Braca Knauss, Zagreb (brothers Knauss, Zagreb) straight 2-line TM.  Photographs and a description of this pattern dagger can be found on pages 60-61 of World of Dress Daggers 1900-1945 by Robert J. Berger. Nickel-plated hilt fittings show virtually no wear with much of the dark factory finish remaining on the circular pommel with center obverse raised inscription, “NHD” (Independent State of Croatia) within a twisted triplet (three-strand interwoven decoration) border. The crossguard features double-sided eagle with downward sloping wings, with head facing to its right. The white celluloid-over-wood grip with horizontal grooves without wire wrap has two small hairline cracks adjacent to the crossguard and several tiny slit type cracks in two of the horizontal grooves but, no wear/aging, scuffs or age spotting. The 9 ¾” long, plated, elliptical cross section, double edged blade, grades EX showing gray spotting to obverse/reverse with a few tiny nicks to cutting edges but, no pitting, and is complete with black leather buffer pad. Dent-free nickel-plated scabbard retains virtually 100% of the factory dark finish, and features a pebbled area between the two hanger bands with a triplet design above the upper hanger band with a combination triplet and trefoil design below the lower hanger band. The top of the scabbard throat is stamped with the Braca Knauss, =Zagreb= trademark. The RARE double strap hangers grade EX+ showing minor wear to the silver bullion facings woven in a triplet design on dark green backings. The deluxe fittings are the same oak leaf embellished upper clip, buckles/slides and lower clips as used on German 2nd Model Luftwaffe hangers. With the exception of blade, the dagger grades EX++/Near MINT.
