Personalized M-1936 Royal Bulgarian Army Dagger. No Maker. Examples of this pattern dagger appear on pages 36-39 of World of Dress Daggers 1900-1945 by Robert J. Berger. The silver-plated hilt fittings show light surface wear with dark age patina to the undamaged open Simons’ crown which is complete with its delicate cross in perfect condition. Crossguard in the form of two outward-facing lion heads features a raised Bulgarian crest on the obverse center with a raised facsimile of the “Bulgarian Military Order for Bravery” on the reverse crossguard. Medium orange celluloid grip shows light surface wear with several with period, slightly off-color repairs to the upper and lower reverse and adjacent to the underside of the pommel and the upper edge of the ferrule but, no damage to the tight twisted silver wire wrap. Plated, double-etched blade grades EX++/Near MINT with minor surface wear/runner marks only with no lifting, pitting or nicks to cutting edges, and is complete with dark brown leather buffer pad. Obverse blade features a Bulgarian Simons’ crown over a Cyrillic “? III” (cipher of King Boris III – 1918 – 1943), while the reverse bears the Cyrillic inscription, “ZA NAMI BOGA” (God is with us). The blade design is the same as the German Army dagger and is complete with dark brown leather buffer pad. Dent-free, silver-plated German Army Officer pattern scabbard shows light surface wear with dark age patina matching the hilt fittings and is complete with two, side-mounted, dome-head throat retaining screws. The reverse scabbard shell between the throat and upper suspension band is personalized with a Gothic “W” highlighted in red background frosting. Nice personalized Bulgarian Army example.
