Description

A photograph of this rare sword, but with lion head pommel, appears on page 144 (left) of Collecting the Edged Weapons of the Third Reich, Volume I.   Additional photos are available on page 85 of Swords of Germany 1900/1945 by John R. Angolia.  Apparently, this model was available with either a silvered or a gilted langet eagle, as the example in the photograph has a silver eagle, while the eagle on this sword is gilt.  Gilted brass hilt fittings retain virtually 100% of the gilting to the heavily-chiseled dove head pommel, floral & oak leaf embellished backstrap and knuckle-bow, and crossguard with unique 1-piece, cast langet/ferrule with large gilt Wehrmacht eagle.  Black celluloid grip shows surface wear to upper obverse, but no cracks or chips.  Is complete with tight twisted silver wire-wrap.  Plated blade measuring 32 1 ¼” in length grades excellent, showing surface wear/runner marks and some gray shadowing, with several nicks to cutting edge.  Is complete with original black leather blade buffer pad.  Dent-free steel scabbard retains approximately 60% of its original black paint which shows much wear to the center portion of the scabbard and uniform crazing throughout.  Rare sword with virtually 100% of the gilting remaining on the hilt, and complete with unique langet eagle.
